Young Guns interviewed

"We keep thinking, we're just a bunch of idiots, how did this happen?" Ben Jolliffe, Young Guns drummer, rather modestly remarks. But the string of national shows and storm of press that's surrounded the alt-rock supremos tells a very different story.

Powering into the festival season with slots lined up at Reading Festival, GuilFest and Redfest, as well as a headline slot at the Madejski Stadium's Olympic Torch Party, The Guide thought it best to catch up with the Buckinghamshire big guns ahead of the action.

Hailing from High Wycombe, the local lads told us: "The best part about our last headline tour was that we got picked up at The White Horse [venue] and got to drive away in our double- decker tour bus from a place from our roots. It was a really nice moment."

With musical influences including Foo Fighters and AC/DC, as well as more chilled tunes from Bon Iver and even a bit of pop slipped in, it's easy to see where their melodic metal tracks come from, but Ben insists "when it comes to writing we ignore everything and write what we want".

So what can crowds look forward to from Young Guns' upcoming festival sets?

"We are very energetic and do everything we can to make our live performances exciting and bring in crowd participation - making sure they are having as much of a good time as we are," said Ben. "We like to try to make everyone happy and try different songs to keep it fresh.

"We're really excited about our Reading Festival set. Growing up I went every year. It was always the one with massive rock stars. When we played in 2011 we loved it. We can't believe we're on just before Feeder this year."

And of past festivals, Ben recalls: "Reading has always been credible. Growing up going there for the whole weekend, my parents would give me £20 and I would spend it straight away on a pack of booze. I will never forget seeing some of the bands there for the first time. It's always the festival you get excited about."

To mark the arrival of the Olymic Torch in Reading, Madejski Stadium is hosting a party on Tuesday night and, although the boys have no idea how they landed the prestigious headlining slot, they are looking forward to taking in the Olympic spirit:

"Madejski is, again, one of those places I remember growing up, seeing rugby matches etc. Being a part of the Olympic Games itself is amazing, it's one of the biggest things to happen in London in our lifetimes. We are really excited to get wrapped up in the whole thing and do as much blagging as possible to try and get to hold the torch."

I think of far more interest is The Wurzels playing Sub89. That is all.
