READING have been priced out of the transfer market in their bid to sign Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas.

No deal: Brian McDermott says Reading cannot afford Iago Aspas.

No deal: Brian McDermott says Reading cannot afford Iago Aspas.

Royals boss Brian McDermott has been scouting the 25-year-old forward for months in an effort to boost his firepower, with Arsenal and Swansea City also showing interest.

It is believed a clause in Aspas' contract means he can decide his own future should a club meet Celta's £8.3 million valuation.

But McDermott confirmed he has ended their interest in Aspas, with Spanish club Valencia almost certain to win the race to sign the player, whose goals fired Celta to promotion to La Liga last season.

Speaking exclusively to the Reading Chronicle, McDermott said: "We've watched Iago play many times but he is very, very expensive. He would cost more than £8 million, that's for sure.

"He's also been a Celta Vigo striker all his life. They're down near the bottom of the league at the moment so I can't see him leaving in January, can you?"

    What a surprise...!

I dont know why we bother linking ourselves to quality players, we're never going to sign any!

It seems in the 'relegation group' only QPR and Southampton want to avoid the drop by spending Premier League money...

Agreed, 8 million is probably too much. 8 million would never bankrupt us though, as by just getting promoted, we've earned far far more than the 6 million we've spent this year, plus the 8 million we could spend on one super signing. And if we stayed up.. well, the money earnt would far exceed the money spent here.

Why is there no middle ground though? It's either 100k on a nobody, or a failed attempt on an 8 million potential superstar!!? - We surely could find a striker for 4-6mil, who could come in and do a really good job for us. We don't need an AMAZING striker worth 8+ million buy just yet - we just need a little more quality than we already have up top.

Spacey you ought to watch Confernece teams. Spending £8 million is like buying a bag of crisps in the Premier League. Clearly RFC don't want the £70mill TV deal next season. They deserve what they will get. Relegation and they certainly won't come straight back up again with this team. What's the point anyway as they will still not spend any money and will only go back down again. League One is about our level which matches our ambition. Real Facts. You know it's spot on.

Spacey, £8m, like Rollerbob says, is not going to dent a BILLIONAIRE'S bank account. Whilst i accept it's alot for Reading ( who i love for some strange reason! ) we simply have to do something like this. McD***headmott said he'd add experience this window... Where is it?! Kelly may have some experience but why would Fulham let a good player go? He can't be that valuable a player...!

Also, adding players or not, our style of play is disgraceful. Hoofing the ball most of the time will NOT work, yet the manager insists on it. I am also at a loss as to why nobody ever shoots! We are so predictable. Look at good teams across the league & Europe, they shoot from 20, 25, 30 yards... We don't shoot from 6!
