Alex Biddle, who is leaving his role of headteacher at Wokingham's St Crispin's School in July, revealed that his school may launch a bid once his replacement is in place.
Academies have freedom from local authority control and from the National Curriculum. They also have the ability to set their own pay and conditions, change the length of the school day or term and alter their admissions process, subject to consultation.
Mr Biddle said: "I think schools like St Crispin's which are confident and successful are well placed to become academies.
"I wouldn't say it is right for every school, but my personal opinion is that St Crispin's has the confidence and expertise to do it."
