POLICE have warned residents to expect a burglary spike after Christmas.

Chief Inspector Simon Bowden, police commander for the Bracknell Forest, explained that after receiving gifts over the festive period, people often tend to leave empty boxes for expensive, hi-tech items, out for recycling. He explained this means residents will unwittingly make themselves a target for burglars because it alerting them to the fact there are expensive items in the house.

Ch Insp Bowden said: "My advice has got to be: if you're going to put out boxes break them down and put them out on the morning of the collection. Alternatively, put them in the car and take them to the tip so you're not advertising to burglars."

He added early next year, plain-clothed officers would be out on patrol, visiting known criminals as part of a crackdown on burglary.
