Youngsters from the Wokingham independent school were given a workshop earlier this month from David Mitchell, an award-winning headteacher and author, on the art of blogs – online diaries.

This came after pupils won a competition – Switched on ICT, run by Rising Stars – last year after writing about two nights spent camping ‘bushcraft’ style in Oxfordshire. Their blog detailed activities such as campfires, pitching tents and ‘tribes got talent’, where they had to prepare and cook fish.

Mr Mitchell led workshops with students, and as a result the whole school is now embarking on a project to use blogging across the school.

Nick Hitchcock, head of ICT at Holme Grange, said: “Writing the blog provided an excellent round-up to Year Four’s bushcraft adventures and Holme Grange was thrilled to win the Rising Stars competition.

“David Mitchell’s workshops were motivating and showed how receiving comments from all over the world can inspire children to develop their writing skills.”

In the workshops, pupils had to blog about subjects ranging from scary stories to the beast from the film Avatar.
