But as someone who rarely goes to the gym, I’m here to find out exactly what they do.
Firstly, let’s make this clear, I had no idea what I was doing at first, making simple mistakes from not pushing the weight hard enough, to setting the treadmill just a little bit too fast so I almost fell back off of the treadmill.
I then shadowed Fit4Less’s apprentice instructor Harriet Bryant as she watched over some eager gym-goers, making sure they did not injure themselves.
I then asked the manager of the gym, Ian Waterhouse, if I could be given an induction there and then. From fitness instructor Humza Bhatti, I learned the ground rules of the gym, ranging from simple things like “Clean your sweat off all the equipment” to “Make sure not to push yourself too hard”.
This induction also slowly ironed out the problems I had with each of the equipment as I learned things like how to set the pacing and angle of the treadmill and how to change the weights on the resistance equipment.
The staff at Fit4Less gym in Bracknell are incredibly friendly and make sure you know exactly what to do.
All in all, if given the opportunity, I’d gladly help out at Fit4Less again, if only so I can get more stuck in, due to knowing how each of the exercise machines work now and being able to take a more active role in the gym.
