A SCHOOL for youngsters with special needs has been ranked as ‘inadequate’ by Ofsted.

Kennel Lane in Bracknell has been put into special measures by the Government’s education watchdog.

The overall rating of ‘inadequate’ – the lowest possible Ofsted score – is a significant fall from the school’s previous ranking of ‘good’ in 2011.

In its latest inspection, Kennel Lane was rated as ‘inadequate’ in three out of the four individual categories – the achievement of pupils; the quality of teaching; and leadership and management.

Behaviour and safety of pupils was ranked as ‘requires improvement’.

Andrea de Bunsen, headteacher of Kennel Lane, said: “We are very disappointed with Ofsted’s overall rating of Kennel Lane School as it does not adequately reflect our school. We are challenging a number of concerns with Ofsted in respect of the process, overall conduct and judgments made.

“Kennel Lane is a good school and we know our

pupils enjoy their education.”

Some aspects identified by the Ofsted inspectors were teachers’ low expectation of pupils, insufficient progress in numeracy and literacy, and governors not having sufficient information to sustain improvements made since the last inspection.

However, the report also highlighted the progress made through ‘interesting activities’, plus the relationship between staff and pupils was ‘excellent’, with young people feeling safe and cared for.

The report – published this week – recognised “a caring and supportive environment for the most vulnerable pupils and, as a result, these pupils make good progress in their communication skills”.

After inspectors visited the school on November 6, an external review has been ordered of the governance, specifically focusing on the Pupil Premium – extra government money given for children entitled to free school meals or who have been in care – to see how this can be improved.

As a result of being in special measures, the school will now be subject to additional inspections to monitor its progress.

Kennel Lane is a mixed school, including a sixth form, with 179 pupils.
