BRACKNELL and Wokingham College is celebrating after receiving an improved Ofsted grade.

The college was rated 'good’ when the report was released yesterday (Wednesday) – one level up from its previous 'satisfactory’ mark in 2012.

Students and staff were quizzed by inspectors during a week-long visit in November.

Principal Campbell Christie said: “I am really pleased that Ofsted has recognised the important role the college has in serving the needs of its learners, local businesses and the wider community and just how well it is carrying this role out. I am also delighted that the Ofsted team was pleased to note how successful my staff are in stretching students to achieve their full potential by developing their broader skills and employability, in addition to delivering their qualifications.”

The effectiveness of leadership and management, and quality of teaching, learning and assessment, were both rated as good.

However the report said the number of students completing their courses 'requires improvement’ – the equivalent of the old 'satisfactory’ rating.

It noted while there had been a 'three-year trend of steady improvement’, keeping students on courses is one of the college’s weaker points.

The inspectors noted most students progress to further training at higher levels with the college or into employment.

Mr Christie added: “This Ofsted report reflects the significant progress staff and governors have made over the last couple of years and indicates we are well on our way to achieving our goal of becoming a world-class, outstanding college.” The report said the college can still improve on some courses, particularly for students older than 19.
