A CHARTERS pupil impressed judges last night (Wednesday) in the first episode of popular BBC One show The Great British Bake Off.

Ascot girl Martha Collison wowed judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry in all three of the challenges last night and had been a contender to be crowned 'star baker' but narrowly missed out.

At 17 she is the youngest-ever contestant on the cookery show, and got off to a flying start in the first task, being praised on both appearrance and taste with her tiramisu-flavoured swiss roll.

Judges voted her into second out of 12 bakers in the technical challenge with her version of Ms Berry's cherry cake, after judges voted 'blind'.

In the final challenge, the 'Showstopper', she delivered 36 identical miniature lemon drizzle cakes infused with thyme, which also impressed the judges.

Martha, who filmed the series while sitting her AS-levels at the Sunningdale school, has progressed to next week after fellow contestant Claire was sent home.
