A HUSBAND and wife team who have run a newsagents in the heart of Ascot for more than two decades are set to retire.

George and Irene Thompson have been at the helm at Martin’s newsagents for 22 years and will retire on Friday.

Despite their longevity at the store they had originally only agreed to run the High Street shop for three months.

Over the years, the couple have won the affections of the community, and have developed a loyal customer base.

Mrs Thompson, 69, said: “We have had a wonderful time at the newsagents and we are going to miss our customers so much.

“I am going to miss our regulars, including TV host Jeremy Kyle and radio DJ Chris Evans! We feel ever so humble that people will miss us.

“There have been difficult

times over the years, with the Tesco’s store affecting both us and Budgens but we’ve had a great time nonetheless. However, I’m 69 and George is 76 so we felt it was time to retire as

we’re not getting any younger.”

The couple – who live in North Ascot but are originally from Liverpool – started working for the Martin’s chain in 1984, running a newsagent’s in Peckham and later Epsom, before moving to Ascot in 1992.

Mrs Thompson said her highlights included chatting to punters during Royal Ascot week each year and watching her customers grow up.

“We have seen our customers grow up from children to fully-grown adults and have in turn served their children too!” added Mrs Thompson.

“It will be sad to leave the shop but we won’t be leaving the area so hopefully we will still see people around.”

In their retirement, the couple plan to spend more time with their 20 grandchildren and two new-born great-grandchildren.

The newsagent’s will be run by a temporary manager until a permanent replacement is found.
