Budding Ascot chef grabs second place in competition to advance to next round

A BUDDING chef from Ascot scooped second place in a cooking competition to seal her place in the next round.

Jemima Denham, 14, a pupil at St Mary’s School, was one of eight young cooks who were looking to book themselves into the regional final of Ascot Rotary Club’s Rotary Young Chef competition.

The district final, which was held at Garth Hill College in Bracknell on Saturday, saw judges Paul Sutcliffe and Tracey Wheelhouse, from St Anne’s Manor Hotel in Wokingham, mark a three-course meal from each contestant.

Jemima’s menu began with mushroom soup, followed by salmon in a vegetable broth before finishing with a chocolate clafoutis with caramelised oranges.

Mr Sutcliffe said after the district final: “All the competitors have achieved a very high standard, producing some lovely dishes, and they should be very proud of themselves.

“It has been very difficult to reach our decision on the winning order.”

The final was won by 17-year-old Hayden Rushby, from Bicester & Banbury College, who is also in the next round.

They were both presented their awards by the Rotary Club’s district governor John Greening.
